The FormLabs is a Stereolithography (SLA) printer which is a laser-based technology that uses a UV-sensitive liquid resin. A UV laser beam scans the surface of the resin and selectively hardens the material corresponding to a cross section of the product, building the 3D part from the bottom to the top. The required supports for overhangs and cavities are automatically generated, and later manually removed.
The Formlabs uses a non-toxic resin which is suitable for office or hospital environments. SLA can provide higher resolution prints but requires more post-processing.
The Makerbot and Ultimaker are Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers. FDM printers use a thermoplastic filament, which is heated to its melting point and then extruded, layer by layer, to create a three dimensional object.
The Makerbot and Ultimaker use Polylactic acid (PLA) filament which is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch. It is non-toxic and suitable for office or hospital environments.
